Sailsbury Arms - Overly fancy for less than fancy food - Edinburgh Restarant Review

We walked into this place once before, but deemed it "too fancy" and ran away to The Abbey. We came back after our curiousness took over last night.

The inside of the restaurant looked pretty nice, if a little over-manufactured.  They had this funny open air gas fire/ flame thing right next to us.

The first thing I have to say about this place is the ale/beer selection is atrocious. There were three ales on tap, Deuchars, White Stallion and Bitter and Twisted. We ordered the Deuchards whilst at the table, but it was finished and the waitress brought a sample of Bitter and Twisted, which we politely declined as we know it's not to our tastes. So we requested a taste of the White Stallion, which was bland and characterless. Nothing reasonably priced in bottles either (£5 for Innis and Gunn!!) We went with tap water.

I ordered the beef burger because noting else seem to appealing with most things containing fish, mushrooms or pasta.  We were waivering over the Sticky Platter (A two person starter) but decided against it. I was glad as i saw a family next to us eat it and the meat portions were tiny and it appeared to be mostly bread).

The burger arrived quite fast, with the waitress rushing off without asking if we wanted anything else.

Tiny flat burger pattie (with "fancy burger" pinkness inside, not that bothered either way) with a lump of iceberg lettuce inside and some non-descript cheese.

Chips were just ok skinny chips. Nothing special really.

The preserve on the side (tomato chutney) was quite a nice touch but still I needed ketchup anyway!

Overall it tasted nice, but not at all worth the price and it needed more care and more meat.

My Partner ordered the fish and chips, I believe it was cod. It's seemed quite ordinary. The batter was fairly mushy and the fish kind of bland.  It came with fairly rustic looking chips.

At the end our bill arrived and we had been charged for two pints of Deuchards we obviously didn't drink, this was corrected as we caught the rapidly flapping about wait staff.

Prices:
Burger: £9.95
Fish and Chips: £10.95

Beer Selection 0/5
Staff 2/5 (they said there were stretched)
Food Quality 2/5
Value for Money 2/5

"Let's not come back here."
